Japan!

Konnichiwa minna-san! (Hello everyone!) Welcome to the official webpage for the summer missions team to Japan from Independent Bible Church. Here you will find our posts throughout the trip (which are below this introduction), and various updates on our ministry once it begins.

If all goes well, we will be serving God in Japan from June 21 to August 7, 2004, working with Asian Access/LIFE Ministries at a pre-established church. Japan is a fascinating nation filled with wonderful, intelligent people, but sadly, Christianity makes up only 1/2 of 1% of the religious atmosphere. It is a nation lost in worldly religion and one that desperately needs Christ.

We are currently in the process of raising the required funds necessary to get us to Japan. If you would like to support us, either through prayer (which is also much needed) or through a financial contribution, please email us at japan2004@aveiceae.com. Thank you kindly and God bless!

Katakana difficulties

posted by: court
I changed Laurel's little picture to the lower right (at her request) and also added katakana versions of our names to the bio pages that are brought up when you click the links below our photos. This was relatively easy as my name and Maureen's name translate fairly well into Japanese - "Ko-to ni-" and "Mo ri-n" (pronounced "Mo leeee-n" as the dash draws out the syllable). Laurel's name, however, doesn't translate to Japanese well. Japanese does not have a phonetic "L" sound, however, "R" is pronounced very much like a cross between an L and an R, with a slight hint of D. There are five "R" syllables - ra, ri, ru, re, and ro. This is what I have to work with in converting Laurel's name... The closest I could come up with is "Ro-re-ru." (Loh-layyy-lu, again, the dashes draw out the syllable) I dunno, maybe she could go by her last name, Henke? (He n ki in Japanese) Or maybe Lolo? (one of her nicknames) We'll see...

Testing once more.

posted by: maureen
Now testing the account I created for Maureen... --court Oh - I should note that right now posts are in PST, but when we're in Japan, I'll change it to JST. So it'll look like we're a day ahead, since Japan is 16 hours ahead and all! :D When I was in Japan the last time, I left my watch on PST, and learned that I could calculate JST by subtracting 8 hours from the PST time and switching the "am" & "pm" around, which works for the most part. It was always fun walking around downtown Tokyo, looking at my watch, and saying to the group "oh, it's 2am back home!" to a chorus of groans.... :)

Testing, testing

One two three. OK! Here's the first post on what will hopefully be a journally-type blog during my missions trip to Japan in the summer of next year, along with my prospective teammates Laurel and Maureen. At this point I have just been accepted as a Team Leader by LIFE Ministries/Asian Access, and just recieved my acceptance packet, and am beginning to go through the procedure of finalizing my teammates and raising funds. I've stuck important links related to summer teams off to the left and will continue to add information as time proceeds.
